Origin

Our Zaatar comes straight from the hilly regions of Palestine, where wild thyme has been growing wild for centuries. Local farmers harvest the thyme by hand, dry it naturally under the sun and mix it with toasted sesame seeds, sumac and a pinch of sea salt – according to an authentic Palestinian recipe.

This traditional blend is more than just an herb; it’s a cultural heritage. Every bite tells the story of generations of craftsmanship, a connection to the land, and the region’s deep food culture. By choosing this Zaatar, you support sustainable farming and fair trade with Palestinian families.

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is za'atar?
Za'atar is a traditional Middle Eastern spice blend consisting of wild thyme, sumac, toasted sesame seeds and sea salt. The combination creates an aromatic, slightly sour and savoury flavour – perfect with bread and olive oil, on salads or warm dishes.

Where can I buy real za'atar?
You can buy real Palestinian za'atar at specialized webshops such as Dadelskopen.nl. Our za'atar is 100% natural, hand-mixed in Palestine and contains no artificial additives - a fair alternative to supermarket varieties from Albert Heijn or Jonnie Boer.

What is the difference between Palestinian za'atar and other types?
Palestinian za'atar is intensely aromatic and contains more wild thyme and sumac than many commercial blends, making it richer in flavor and more traditional in composition than, for example, za'atar from Europe or Turkey.

How do you use za'atar in cooking?
Mix za'atar with olive oil and use as a dip for bread, sprinkle on hummus, salads, grilled vegetables or meat. Also delicious on flatbread (manakish) or on a fried egg.

Is za'atar healthy?
Yes. Za'atar contains antioxidants from thyme and sumac, healthy fats from sesame seeds and natural minerals. It supports digestion and is completely plant-based and rich in fiber.

Can I use za'atar in an Ottolenghi recipe?
Absolutely. Zaatar is often mentioned in Ottolenghi recipes for the unique flavor dimension it adds. Use our authentic za'atar as a base for your Middle Eastern dishes.

Why choose za'atar from Dadelskopen.nl?
Our za'atar comes directly from Palestinian farmers, is pure and mixed with love according to age-old tradition. No fillers, only taste and honesty - unlike many commercial variants at AH or Jumbo.
